22 Appelfeld, Aharon THE AGE OF WONDERS
David R Godine Pub 1981 0879234024 / 9780879234027 Hardcover VG/VG
Light General Wear. Interior Clean and bright. Quite a decent copy.; 1.26 x 7.72 x 4.88 Inches; 270 pages; The secure world of a well-established and apparently perfectly assimilated Jewish writer living in an Austrian town before World War II, disintegrates under the force of political and social realities that daily sanctify the old and endemic Austrian anti-Semitism. We learn what we learn through Bruno, the thirteen-year-old son of the family, whose spare and uninflected account discloses the slow onset of disaster. His father, a successful Austrian intellectual, refuses the implications of what s happening and embraces the humiliating routines of Jewish self-hatred. To the vicious attacks on his writing and character, he adds his own voice until, with nothing left not faith, not family, not dignity he disappears. Thirty years later, the war long over, Bruno, at a low point in a childless marriage, responds to ambiguously positive inquiries about his father s work, and travels from his home in Jerusalem to the Austrian town of his childhood. What he encounters in that town, now clean of Jews, enables him to face his own profound losses, and, in some measure, redeem the sins of his father.; LITERATE

23 Appelfeld, Aharon THE RETREAT
Dutton Adult 1984 0525242376 / 9780525242376 Hardcover VG/VG
Light General Wear. Interior Clean and bright. Quite a decent copy.; 20 x 20 x 20 Inches; 164 pages; The year is 1937. On a remote hilltop some distance from Vienna stands a hotel called The Retreat. Founded by a man who is determined to cleanse himself and his guests of all "Jewish traits," it is a resort of assimilation, with daily activities that include lessons in how to look, talk, act--in short, how to pass--as a gentile. But with Hitler on the march, the possibilities of both assimilation and retreat are quickly fading for the hotel's patrons, men and women who are necessarily--and horrifically--blind to their fate. Mordant, shrewd, and elegantly written, The Retreat is a moving story of people forbidden to retreat from themselves, by the writer whom Irving Howe called "one of the best novelists alive."; LITERATE

24 Appelfeld, Aron TO THE LAND OF THE CATTAILS
Weidenfeld & Nicolson 1986 1555840078 / 9781555840075 Hardcover VG/VG
Light General Wear. Interior Clean and bright. Quite a decent copy.; 0.9 x 8.2 x 5.8 Inches; 148 pages; At 17, Toni left her native Bukovina, "the land of the cattails," running off with a man to live in Vienna, where she shed her Jewishness. Now, at 34, she and her teenage son, Rudi, return home to try to locate her long-lost parents and reclaim her heritage for her half-Jewish son. However, the year is 1938 and, although Appelfeld never explicitly mentions Nazism or even anti-Semitism, it is clear that Toni and Rudi are en route to destruction. Delayed on their journey by the pleasures they find at the hotels where they stay--and young Rudi's explorations of alcohol and sex--they finally arrive at the village. Toni is immediately taken away along with the other villagers, and Rudi embraces his mother's religion just before it is clear that he too will be a victim. As he does in all his fiction, Appelfeld writes vividly and with passion about the fate of the Jews, and about what he sees as their fatalistic inability to confront the facts in the face of annihilation.; LITERATE
